Back on WTA Top 100 with Olaru - Facts from South America

[28 February 2009]

Two of the last WTA events held in Bogota and Acapulco were the opportunities for Raluca Olaru to regain her status and value as a top 100 WTA player. What is the atmosphere other there and especially what happened during this two weeks can be read in the following lines in an interview taken from Raluca undertaken with the amability of OpenTenis:

"In Bogota, despite of the different and tough conditions ( altitude up to 2800 meters ), I managed to play two good matches. I was very happy after I turned the match in my favor in the first round against Lino Mourdes Dominguez ( 80 WTA, final score: 57, 64, 76(3)) and most of all I am very satisfied about my game.

Of course that on this level every opponent is redoubtable. Against Dominguez it was very tough to play because she has a typical spanish game and it's necessary a lot of effort to resist until the end. I played the tiebreak in the third set, so you can imagine what happened other there! That's why after the win against Ani Maret ( 111 WTA, final score: 64, 62 ) in the second round I was very excited and happy that I could finish the match in straight sets.

In the quarterfinals the fatigue was obvious, Patricia Mayr being also a player who has a game which require a lot of effort. I have to recognize that she played well and I couldn't keep the rythm, especially from the physical point of view. There were anyway two significant moments during the match: the first one in the second game of the first set and the other one at 3-2 for her in the second setand 30-0 up for me on her serve. But that's the way it was, like I said she played a good game and she was fresh than me. The rest it's history.

After this tournament I played in Acapulco. I left Bogota at 7 o'clock in the morning, I had to wake up at at 4  am and I arrived at 3 o'clock  in the afternoon in Acapulco and at 7 pm I played against Szatmari. I had also a light cold, but in the end I managed to win pretty easy.

The big one was in the second day when I started to really feel the fatigue. I had to fight against me, both mentally and physically against Martina Muller ( 199 WTA ) which has also a game with a lot of balls back and back again and in the end what I can say is that I am very proud the way I managed to finish the game.

Against Alina Jidkova ( 253 WTA ) it was the the match number six in seven day, but I finished also the game.

On tuesday during the match against Gisela Dulko ( 39 WTA ) my body couln't resist anymore. I felt bad, I had to puke, I couldn't eat and I couldn't speak to much. I wanted anyway to play and finish the match and I did the best under this circumstances. But in doubles I had to withdraw from the same reason.

In this moment I am hoping to gain my shape as soon as possible and start the preparation for Indian Wells and Miami.

Generally speaking there were 2 good tournaments and I am happy that I've played few matches."

You can see a multimedia album from Acapulco here.

In this moment Raluca Olaru is number 105 WTA and with some good results in the next tournaments Raluca will be back in the top 100 WTA.

Good luck Raluca!
