European Champion' stories

[17 August 2008]

Olimpia Tennis: Roland Garros remains as an unique and beautiful chapter, isn't it? How was Wimbledon for you and describe in few words the transition from clay to grass.
Elena Bogdan: Yes, indeed, the experience from Roland Garros is and will be a beautiful remembrance. At Wimbledon was nice, but it seems it wasn't the best for me and the transition from a surface to another was ... quick!

Olimpia Tennis: What impressed you at Wimbledon? There are any disappointments from this Grand Slam event?
Elena Bogdan: The most surprising thing were the official's garments as ones seen in the past in the ‘70th century. There wasn't  any disappointment ... that's the way it was.

Olimpia Tennis: After a short stop on grass, the clay turned to be once again the surface where the history was written: you become the new European Champion under 18 after so many years from the last gold medal won by a Romanian player. How do you feel?
Elena Bogdan: I am very happy to be an European Champion, especially because I win this title at a superior age category. It was a tough tournament with a bad weather.

Olimpia Tennis: How was the road to the title? Something special happened?
Elena Bogdan: Like I said, the matches were very tough, the weather pretty bad and the fact that we had to play in two different places during the whole week were the difficulties occurred.

Olimpia Tennis: There are rumours that when you are representing Romania everything becomes harder. It's the same in your case?
Elena Bogdan: In the first matches I hadn't emotions, but starting from quarterfinals I felt that I was close from a medal so the emotions begun to rise.

Olimpia Tennis: It's easy for you to play for Romania or for yourself?
Elena Bogdan: I think it's the same, but it's beautiful when we are playing with the team.

Olimpia Tennis: What was harder to adapt: the transition from clay to grass or viceversa?
Elena Bogdan: The transition from clay to grass.

Olimpia Tennis: After clay follows hard and the last grand slam event of the year: US Open. What is your objective?
Elena Bogdan: Top secret:)

Olimpia Tennis: Before US Open you will participate in Canada in a ITF Junior tournament with the ITF Team again. How do you feel to be nominated once again to take part under the arms of this international team?
Elena Bogdan: I feel great that I was nominated once again in this team and also I am very happy that my coach will come to US Open to be next to me.

Olimpia Tennis: Your are training for US Open in the National Tennis Center and last days you practiced alongside you clubmate  and one of the best Romanian player Raluca Olaru. How was the experience?
Elena Bogdan: Onestly I had a lot of emotions but I think I passed well this and there were two good practice sessions.

Olimpia Tennis: Do you like greenset? This surface advantages you?
Elena Bogdan: I like playing on hard and I believe that hard advantages me.

Olimpia Tennis: There are any kind of improvements that you are trying to achieve in this practice days?
Elena Bogdan: I am focusing on the serve and volley patterns and on finishing the points quicker with the volley.

Olimpia Tennis: The International Tennis Federation has nominated you as one of the European revelation of the year being the player with the higher jump in the ITF Juniors rankings. This can be  a reward for you results, but also a challenge for the future?
Elena Bogdan: I was surprised when I've heard such thing and of course there is a challenge too.

Olimpia Tennis: Thank you, good luck!
Elena Bogdan: Thank you too ...
